Building Nations…

Day 172 First, I read this article in the Army Times. Of course, I then had to find out what Captain Estrada had said which led me to this article in the Washington Post. In the course of looking for Captain Estrada’s article I also found an editorial reply of sorts from the Washington Post. … Read more

The Anti-war Case…

Day 127 Read this article yesterday about why the war on Iraq – more accurately the war on Saddam – is/was wrong. The author offers two major principles for invading another country. Principle One: In general, don’t invade people on their own behalf unless they are clearly asking you to invade them. Principle Two: If … Read more

A Pet Peeve….

Day 90 How the US government spends money from the military budget really irks me. Congress will spend billions of dollars to develop an aircraft that, by the time it is delivered to the forces that will actually use it in combat, will be out of date and near obsolete. Aegis class cruisers were just … Read more

Rambling Thoughts on Current Events

Day 34 Fallujah. Japanese hostages. Just a few of the items from Iraq in the news this past day or two. It all reminds us that Iraq is a violent and lawless place. There is a huge power vacuum. What is known is that the US will not fill the power void created by the … Read more

It’s An Enlisted Man Thing

The following quote is from this article (dead link). Last night, while you were sleeping, the teeth of hurricane Isabel came through this area and tore hell out of everything… We have thousands of trees down…power outages…traffic signals out…roads filled with downed limbs and “gear adrift” debris…We have flooding…and the place looks like it has … Read more

Iraq: After Saddam

Well, this ought to get interesting. As I sat in the early morning line up at our favorite surf spots in the months and weeks preceeding the US invasion of Iraq, my good friend Jamie and I discussed the coming war often, some times heatedly. In those discussions I said that two things seemed significant … Read more

Team Building

I am glad to see the United States still making an effort to get UN backing before using force to disarm Iraq. I believe that if the United States abandons the effort and goes to war leading a “coalition of the willing” significant damage will be done to the reputation and prestige of the United … Read more

The Road to Baghdad

The UN & its Security Counsel So, we have Security Council members France and Russia saying they will veto any resolution that contains either an ultimatum or a use of force trigger. There are very few who would argue against the notion that Saddam Hussein’s current efforts to comply with UN resolution 1441 are due … Read more

And as if to make my point…

Powell Says Saddam Trying to Divide U.N. “Iraq’s too-little, too-late gestures are meant not just to deceive and delay action by the international community, he has as one of his major goals to divide the international community, to split us into arguing factions. That effort must fail,” Powell said. Yes Mr. Powell, I agree that … Read more

And the Fiddler Plays On

Hussein’s every public move is calculated for its affect on the world community for delaying the US effort to enforce the UN resolutions by use of military force. It seems clear that Saddam Hussein has no intention of complying with the UN resolutions. If the UN and its Security Council are not going to allow the enforcement of their resolutions by the use of military force then they should withdraw their resolutions, lift the sanctions and make some kind of an honest effort to help the Iraqi people.
